Arlington Highlands Filling Up Fast
October 19th, 2006 - By Andrea Jares ARLINGTON - Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts will become the first store to open in the Arlington Highlands shopping center Friday, and it will soon have plenty of company. Over the next month, more than 200,000 square feet of shopping will open at the new center, said John Mathes, senior vice president with Retail Connection. He said more openings will come starting March 1. Mathes, whose family has owned the land at Interstate 20 and Matlock Road for decades, said the openings are ahead of schedule. "We were able to exceed our expectations on it," he said. "It was critical to get this first wave of tenants open before the holidays." Tenants have agreed to fill 75 percent of the space, Mathes said, and letters of intent have been signed for 10 percent more. "It's really 85 percent committed, which is remarkable because we haven't opened a single tenant," he said. The outlook for the soonest-to-open stores: Staples is opening Saturday, Mathes said. PetSmart will open a 27,415-square-foot store Oct. 30, with a grand opening Nov. 4, said Shana Costarella, company spokeswoman. It will include a veterinary hospital, grooming salon, training center and a pet hotel that will open in January, she said. Golf Galaxy will open Nov. 17, according to the company. The stores will be able to evaluate golfers' swings and fit them with appropriate equipment. Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts is planning a grand opening celebration Nov. 2-4. BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse's grand opening will be Tuesday. Shoe Pavilion is opening its sixth Metroplex location Oct. 28. Famous Footwear is expected to open before Nov. 17, Mathes said. Conn's electronics and appliance store is also expected to open before Nov. 17, he said. Studio Movie Grill, where people watch first-run movies and eat, is opening Jan. 15, Mathes said.
